Greece's high schools reopened on Monday after a five-month closure to curb coronavirus infections with precautions including virus tests for students and teachers twice per week, the education minister said.

High school classes had been held online since November 7. Monday's reopening saw some schools hold classes outdoors.
Primary and secondary schools, which had briefly reopened, remain closed across the country.
Every Monday and Thursday, high school students and teachers will have to be screened for Covid-19 with self-tests available free in pharmacies.

A positive self-test will result in a 48-hour quarantine and another screening in a clinic. A second positive test will lead to 14 days of quarantine.
For the first day back, 613 students and teachers tested positive on self-tests, the majority showing no symptoms, according to the prime minister's office.
Students and teachers must also wear masks, recess will be staggered to limit crowds and canteens will be closed.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Monday that self-tests will be extended from the end of this week to employees at stores as well as those working in transport and food delivery.

Studies for Turkey’s seven COVID-19 vaccine candidates are progressing, with three of them in the human trial stage, the country’s vice president said on Friday.

During his visit to the clinical research center, Fuat Oktay said that necessary work is being done to start mass production of the vaccine following approval by Turkey’s drug regulatory authority Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency.
He urged citizens, who do not suffer from a chronic illness and have not received any coronavirus vaccine, to volunteer for the human trials.

A veteran Greek crime journalist was shot dead outside his home in Athens on Friday, a police source said, in a rare crime targeting a member of the media.

Giorgos Karaivaz, who worked for private TV station Star and also ran the news blog bloko.gr, was shot several times in the southern Athens district of Alimos, the police source told AFP.
-The murder has shocked us all- government spokeswoman Aristotelia Peloni said in a statement.
-The authorities are already investigating the case- she added.
Reports said the journalist had been shot by two men on a motorbike.
-The founder and owner of bloko.gr is no longer with us- Karaivaz's blog said.
-Somebody chose to silence him, to stop him with bullets from writing his stories- it said.
According to reports, Karaivaz, who was one of Greece's longest-tenured and best known crime reporters, was married and had a child. 
-I can't even process this information, I've known this man for 32 years- fellow Star TV journalist Vaios Syrros said during the station's afternoon news show.
While Greek media offices are frequently targeted in firebomb and vandalism attacks, journalist killings are rarer in Greece.
Some journalists request police protection after receiving threats but according to reports, Karaivaz was unguarded.
The shooting occurred at a time when Greek authorities had received criticism for allocating too many police guards to a controversial TV presenter.
Hours before Karaivaz' murder, Citizen's Protection Minister Michalis Chrysohoidis had suggested in parliament that state protection was being exploited by "rats of the public sphere" who did not deserve it.
-For the last 20 years, every (police) minister has tried to take back (officers) from 'VIP duty' and put them back on the front line- the minister said.
In July, tabloid newspaper owner Stefanos Chios survived after being shot in the neck and chest by a hooded man outside his home.
The case is still under investigation.
In 2010, radio manager, blogger and investigative journalist Socratis Giolias was also gunned down outside his home. 
At the time, state TV NET said he had been working on a story about corruption.

France on Friday said under 55s who received a first injection of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine should be given a second jab from a different producer, but the WHO warned there was not sufficient data to recommend the practice.

France's national health authority HAS last month said the AstraZeneca vaccine should only be given to those aged 55 and over because of reports of potentially deadly blood clots in a very small number of younger people vaccinated.
Officials in France initially said that those given the AstraZeneca jab in a first dose should go ahead with the second jab even if aged under 55.
But in a ruling affecting over half a million people, the HAS said that those aged under 55 who had been given the AstraZenaca as their first dose would now get the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine as their second.
France has been injecting health workers as a priority group meaning that many younger people have already received the AstraZeneca jab.
But the World Health Organization (WHO) -- which has recommended the same product be used for both doses -- said Friday there was "no adequate data" on switching Covid-19 vaccines between doses.
-There is no adequate data to be able to say whether this is something that could be done, so... interchangeability of vaccine was not something that we could give a recommendation on- WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told reporters.
Some 533,000 people are affected by the decision, the HAS said.
They include Health Minister Olivier Veran, a 40-year-old neurologist, who was given the AstraZeneca vaccine live on television on February 8. 
-It is completely consistent to say that we do not recommend the AstraZeneca vaccine to people under 55 years of age while we learn more- the minister told RTL radio.

During the testimony of Novalić's secretary Bahra Džaka, the prosecutors asked the witness about this document in the courtroom, but the Court of B&amp;H did not allow the note to be read, stating to the prosecutor that this document should have been attached when the prohibitive measures were requested.
This note reveals much and is attached to the lawyers with the indictment as Exhibit no. 11, after the expertise of Novalić's mobile phone and the analysis sent by SIPA to the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H.
It is interesting that "someone from SIPA" sent this note, signed by Damir Vranešić, head of the financial intelligence department, to Prime Minister Novalić's mobile phone, but he later got rid of his mobile device, explaining that he always changes cell phones, which he admitted on record.
But, it is interesting that he replaced his mobile phone in Austria, in the midst of a pandemic, when it was almost impossible to travel.
It was this note, which was a secret document and from which it is clear that the Prime Minister received secret information from SIPA, that Novalić's secretary Bahra Džaka later printed it, following the instructions of the Prime Minister.
Džaka, to whom the correspondence in the Court was attached, could not remember this document, but she revealed one incredible piece of information, "that she also changed her mobile phone after the opening of the investigation".

When the prosecutor Mirza Hukeljić asked witness Džaka, by what name she memorized the telephone number of Prime Minister Novalić in her mobile phone and through how many telephone numbers she communicated with him, she first answered "that she thinks the Prime Minister was saved in her phone as Prime Minister Fadil Novalić ".
However, after prosecutor Hukeljić showed the Viber correspondence, it turned out that Džaka communicated with Prime Minister Novalić on June 26th last year, whose number was then stored in her phone under the name "Sana N."
Džaka admitted "that she took some initials of family members" and memorized the prime minister's number under that name.
It was in that correspondence the official note of the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) from May 29th last year was, which is proof of the leak of classified information from SIPA.

An investigator from the Special Department for War Crimes is in the Zabrđe settlement, in the Sarajevo municipality of Novi Grad, where, on the order of the prosecutor working on the case, he is coordinating the work and activities within the exhumation process.

During the construction works, mortal remains were found at the mentioned site, which are presumed to belong to the victims from the previous war, after which the works have been suspended, the site has been secured, and the process of exhumation of mortal remains of at least one person at the said site has begun.
The work of authorized persons in the exhumation process is coordinated by the investigator of the Special Department for War Crimes, and other persons present at the site are a forensic pathologist, representatives of the Institute for Missing Persons (INO) B&amp;H, required workers and machinery.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has dropped plans to buy vaccines from the Serum Institute of India, an official confirmed on Thursday.

Raji Tajudeen, head of Division of Public Health Institutes and Research, told Anadolu Agency that the health agency will get entire vaccines from Johnson &amp; Johnson. “As Africa CDC we will be partnering with J&amp;J," he said.

The COVAX vaccine facility has delivered nearly 38.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to 102 countries and economies across six continents, six weeks after it began to roll out supplies, according to a statement on Thursday.The programme offers a lifeline to low-income countries in particular, allowing them in the first instance to inoculate health workers and others at high risk, even if their governments have not managed to secure vaccines from the manufacturers.
But there have been some delays, the GAVI vaccine alliance and World Health Organization said in a statement.
Reduced availability of delayed some deliveries in March and April, and much of the output of the Serum Institute of India, which makes the AstraZeneca vaccine, is being kept in India, where daily infections surpassed 100,000 for the first time on Monday.
The Caribbean island of St. Lucia became the 100th country to receive vaccines through COVAX. Iran, also battling a record rate of infection, is another recent recipient.
The 102 countries reached so far include 61 benefiting from a mechanism essentially financed by donors.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday called it a “travesty” that some countries still did not have enough vaccines to begin inoculating health workers and the most vulnerable.
GAVI said last month that it planned to deliver 237 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine - which has been produced at cost for a few dollars a dose, and does not require the advanced refrigeration of some other coronavirus vaccines - to 142 countries by the end of May.
-COVAX may be on track to deliver to all participating economies in the first half of the year, yet we still face a daunting challenge as we seek to end the acute stage of the pandemic- GAVI chief executive Seth Berkley said in the statement.
Nonetheless, COVAX still expects to deliver at least 2 billion doses this year 2021, and to diversify the offering beyond the AstraZeneca/Oxford and Pfizer/BioNTech shots it is currently supplying.

The March of the Living, an annual event that brings together Holocaust survivors and family members at the former Auschwitz death camp, was held online for a second consecutive year on Thursday due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants usually stage a march at the site in southern Poland but restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus have made that impossible. Nevertheless, organisers and participants say it is important that the event goes ahead.
-We have no other choice- said 84-year-old Holocaust survivor Tzipora Freund.
-This time it has to be virtual because every year people march... Each and every year youngsters and elderly will march there and will not forget.-

Freund and her son, who were in Israel, laid virtual messages of remembrance in the railway track leading to the gate of the death camp as part of a computer simulation of the event, as did Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and others.

More than 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, perished in the gas chambers or from starvation, cold and disease at Auschwitz, which the Nazis set up in occupied Poland during World War Two.
-We have to remember that the Holocaust, anti-Semitism and also hate and racism are things that are happening. It’s not something that is part of history- said Baruch Adler, 70, co-founder and vice chairman of the March of the Living.
-So my message is: You have to know that you have to fight. That remembrance, it’s a fight-
