One year ago, China announced the first death from a new virus in Wuhan -- 12 months later, Covid-19 has claimed 1.9 million lives in an unrelenting march across the world.
But in the central Chinese city of 11 million where the first known outbreak started, the virus has been extinguished and residents are proud of its revival.
On Monday morning, the anniversary slipped by unmarked in Wuhan -- commuters moved freely to work while parks and riverside promenades buzzed with walkers in a city determined to banish its tag as the coronavirus ground zero.
In a sparse report on January 11, 2020, China confirmed its first death from an unknown virus -- a 61-year-old man who was a regular at the now-notorious Wuhan wet market linked to many of the early cases.
The world would soon become grimly familiar with the disease that killed him as Covid-19.
Little is still known about the first victim, including his name, while the market where the first reported clusters of cases were traced back to has remained closed, surrounded by boarding.
After a long wrangle, China on Monday said independent experts from the WHO will be allowed into the country from Thursday, with the international community hoping they can visit the market and retrace in detail those early days of the virus in Wuhan.

The city has now bounced back and residents are revelling in the freedoms they enjoy. 
-Wuhan is the safest city in China now, even the whole world- 66-year-old resident Xiong Liansheng told AFP on Monday.
Commuters headed to work and others strolled along the riverfront -- a sharp contrast to the countries still under strict lockdowns and restrictions.
-The Wuhan people's awareness of epidemic prevention and control is very high -- even my two-year-old grandson will wear a mask when going out- said Xiong. 
Elderly couples danced, some masked, but hands clasped as social distancing withered in the winter sunshine in a busy park next to the Yangtze river.
-Most cases in China are imported from overseas now and our country has a good control of it- said Zhong, an 80-year-old woman giving only one name.
-All the Wuhan people feel very safe in the city, and we come here and dance happily everyday.-
China has faced criticism at home and abroad over its initial handling of the virus, including attempts to silence whistleblowers and failure to report cases for days in early January.
Two weeks after confirming the first death, Wuhan and the surrounding province were put under lockdown.
Chinese authorities are trying to stamp out a series of local outbreaks, reporting 103 new infections on Monday -- the highest figure since July last year -- most in northern Hebei province.
Transport links have been cut and schools closed in an effort to contain the cluster. 
There are also mounting fears that travel plans for hundreds of millions of people for the Lunar New Year next month may be ruined as virus controls tighten.
But it is a fraction of the daily infections in the United States, Britain and many European countries.
China's official toll stands at 4,634 deaths from Covid-19.

Seven mass coronavirus vaccination sites opened across England on Monday as the government races to dose millions of people while a new strain of the disease runs rampant across the country.
The sites include football stadiums and a horse racing course, and are located in cities including Bristol, London, Newcastle and Manchester.
They are to vaccinate thousands per week and several more sites are expected to follow, according to NHS England.
Hospitals and pharmacies are set to begin offering the vaccine later this week, with the government hoping to have doses available for 12 million of England's 56 million population by mid-February, starting with the most vulnerable.
More than 1.2 million people have already been vaccinated in England, since the roll-out began of the Pfizer-BioNTech jab on December 8. Britain has since approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Moderna jabs.
-We are mobilising the government, NHS (National Health Service) and the armed forces as part of a massive national effort- said health minister Matt Hancock.
Care home residents, all those aged 70 or above, frontline health workers and clinically extremely vulnerable people are first in line for the vaccines.
Britain is grappling with its worst outbreak of the disease since it hit the country early last year.
The record case rates and daily death toll are being blamed on a new, more transmissible strain, which has piled pressure on the NHS, leading to warnings of shortages of critical care beds.
The state-run NHS risks being overwhelmed and the country is in its third lockdown until at least mid-February, with predictions the restrictions could last even longer. 
-The next few weeks are going to be the worst weeks of this pandemic in terms of numbers into the NHS- England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty told BBC television on Monday.&nbsp;

-What we need to do, before the vaccines have had their effect... is we need to really double down- on observing lockdown measures, he added. 
Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi also urged the public to follow the rules, which some have criticised for not being strict enough.
-In supermarkets, we need to make sure people actually wear masks and follow the one-way system rule- he told Sky News.
-We don't want to go any tougher because this is a pretty tough lockdown, but what we need is people to behave as if they've got the virus so we can bring this virus under control whilst we vaccinate.-
Britain on Saturday said it had recorded over three million coronavirus cases since the pandemic began last year, having on Friday reported a record 1,325 deaths over a 24-hour period of people who tested positive for the virus.
The full death toll now stands at more than 80,000, one of the highest in Europe alongside Italy.

The suspect, and now the accused in the "Respirators" affair, Fikret Hodžić, the owner of the company "Srebrena Malina", which imported 100 respirators from China to B&amp;H worth 10.5 million KM, had money paid to him by the FB&amp;H Government for respirators in the manner that he paid import duties and costs of the import procedure, it is stated in the indictment of the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H.

On December 30th, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed the indictment against Fadil Novalić, Prime Minister of the Federation B&amp;H, Fahrudin Solak, suspended director of the Federal Civil Protection Administration (FCPA), Hodžić,the owner of "Srebrna malina", and FB&amp;H Deputy Prime Minister Jelka Milićević.
They are also accused of procuring protective equipment worth 2.9 million KM.
According to the details of the indictment, the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H, based on the financial investigation, determined that the accused Hodžić in the period from April 3rd to May 4th, 2020, when by the decision of the Court of B&amp;H funds of "Srebrna malina" were blocked in the amount of 1,096,520 KM, in addition to paying import duties, he also made other payments and disbursements in B&amp;H and abroad in the total amount of 400,000 KM.

However, prosecutors believe that on April 27th, a few days after 80 respirators arrived in Sarajevo, Hodžić withdrew 100,000 KM in cash from an account that he used in a manner known to him, but that in order to conceal this payment and the purpose of use, on May 5th, he issued an order to the accountant of the company to make a decision to increase the cash maximum up to 120,000 KM.
In the request to the accountant, Hodžić asked that the decision should be dated on 27th April, after which, in order to conceal this money, he requested that a decision be made on the distribution of money for the alleged purchase of raspberries, which V. K. did.

The indictment alleges that Hodžić kept the money he knew to have been obtained by a criminal offense, and then disposed of it and used it in his business.
Novalić and Solak concealed that money and used untrue business documents as if they were true and that they entered untrue data in business books, documents and files.

The list of witnesses in this case includes 67 persons who will be called by prosecutors depending on the order in which the evidence is presented. However, it is interesting that on the list, apart from Ana Bavrka, whom Hodžić reported as an employee, there is his brother Redžep, otherwise one of the co-owners of "Srebrna malina".

An adequate response to the migrant situation requires much better coordination of all levels of government and international organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said the Una-Sana Canton Prime Minister Mustafa Ružnić at today's regular session of the Association of Independent Intellectuals "Circle 99". 
Speaking as an introductory speaker on the topic of "The Development of the Krajina Region and the Migrant Crisis", he stressed that not even three years since the migrant crisis escalated and the so-called Balkan route opened, there is still no coordinating body that determines who is responsible on behalf of each institution.
On the other hand, the problem is, warns Ružnić, insufficient control of the state border, especially the eastern one, as well as the fact that migrants are unevenly distributed throughout B&amp;H, emphasizing that the burden of this problem cannot be tackled by the Krajina region on its own.
He notes that the basic request to the Council of Ministers of B&amp;H is to establish that coordination and ensure the even distribution of reception centers, but he believes that the border crossings where migrants come to B&amp;H must be closed.
He says that it is necessary to establish transparent procedures for the flow of money entering B&amp;H for migration purposes and to determine the competent institution for the crisis, stating that 91 million euros have been allocated for B&amp;H so far, but it is also necessary to adopt an operational plan for migration management and show that B&amp;H as a country has things under control. 
He also asked the Presidency of B&amp;H to adopt a quota of how many migrants B&amp;H is able to take care of, which other countries have done, reminding that, under the existing laws, 7,000 migrants currently in B&amp;H should all be deported and that is the job of the Service for Foreigners Affairs. 
He said that he was proud that the Una-Sana Canton, with its modest financial resources, managed to struggle on its own and has formed several reception centers and accommodated migrants, provided them with assistance and provided education for the children that attend four schools in the USC.
But, regardless of that, Prime Minister Ružnić points out that the Krajina region cannot deal with this problem on its own and take care of thousands of migrants passing through on the Balkan route.

The congratulations sent on the occasion of the unconstitutional day of B&amp;H entity of Republic of Srpska, January 9th, marked in that entity as the "Day of the RS", by the Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić and Montenegrin Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić, stand as acts of disrespect for the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and are a reflection of disrespect for the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole and a direct attack on its sovereignty, stated the B&amp;H Presidency member Šefik Džaferović on Sunday.
We understand very well the messages of this kind that come from our neighborhood, and we will know how to treat them. I am convinced that these messages, directed against Bosnia and Herzegovina, are very much observed and understood in Brussels and Washington.
It is especially disappointing that the Prime Minister of Montenegro, after the institutions of this neighboring country have clearly and unequivocally issued their position on the genocide in Srebrenica and the events from the period of aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, has decided to join the support that official Belgrade provides to a policy of celebrating the Greater Serbia ideology and all the evil that it has produced in the past.
I expect the President of Montenegro, Milo Đukanović, to comment on Prime Minister Krivokapić's actions on behalf of Montenegro, Džaferović said in a statement.

More than 200 migrants and refugees who had almost no shelter at the Lipa site near Bihać, have already been accommodated in the erected tents of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Service for Foreigners Affairs confirmed that they are working quickly to determine the total number of people in what is left of the reception camp, i.e. the final works on the preparation of the lot and the remaining tents. 
It was announced that the issue of electricity and drinking water supply will be resolved no later than Sunday, while the Red Cross volunteers from the City of Bihać and the Una-Sana Canton (USC) have been working since Saturday morning on setting up a large tent from where meals would be distributed.
The issue of sanitary facilities has also been temporarily resolved. The first meals have already been distributed and both migrants and refugees are finally more satisfied with the living conditions.
-We finally get what we were promised. Now we will at least some kind of roof over our heads, a bed and heating. We also get two daily meals, which is much better compared to the previous period. I hope that we will soon be able to charge our mobile phones so that we can get in touch with our families- said Ali from Pakistan.
Minister of Internal Affairs of the Una-Sana Canton, Nermin Kljajić, emphasizes that a huge organizational step has been made in Lipa near Bihać in recent days, and that the people are much calmer, considering that they will now have more dignified living conditions.
-The situation is much calmer and completely under the control of police officers and the Service for Foreigners Affairs of B&amp;H. I am sure that in a day or two everything will be finished and that somewhere around 700 migrants will finally have better conditions here- Kljajić added.

Austria’s Labour Minister Christine Aschbacher has resigned after allegations that she plagiarised some of her university work, but denied any wrongdoing and said she was stepping down to protect her family.
Aschbacher, a member of the conservative Austrian People’s Party which leads the coalition government, allegedly copied at least one fifth of her doctoral dissertation from other sources, as well as chunks of her diploma thesis, according to academic Stefan Weber who specialises in detecting plagiarism.
Aschbacher said she had written her dissertation and thesis “to the best of her knowledge and belief,” Austrian news agency APA reported.
-The hostility, the political agitation, and the insults are unfortunately being unloaded not only on me, but also on my children, and with unbearable force- she was cited as saying.
-I cannot allow this to continue in order to protect my family. For this reason, I am resigning from office.-
Chancellor Sebastian Kurz thanked Aschbacher for her work and said he accepted her decision. On Sunday he named economic researcher Martin Kocher as the new minister.
According to Weber, Aschbacher had taken at least one fifth of her dissertation, titled “Drafting a Leadership Style for Innovative Companies,” from other sources without properly labeling the citations.
Among other things, she had translated an article from Forbes magazine from English, repeating the original author’s claim to say she herself had worked “with hundreds of teams”.

Austrian labour minister quits over plagiarism allegations

The number of people seeking asylum in Germany in 2020 fell by 30 percent compared with the previous year, official data showed Sunday, as closed borders and coronavirus lockdowns slowed arrivals.
Germany's interior ministry recorded just over 76,000 first-time asylum applications last year, 31.5 percent fewer than in 2019.
Most of the requests came from nationals from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Turkey, it said in a statement.
A further 26,520 asylum applications were made for children under the age of one who were born in Germany to non-nationals, bringing the total number of applications to 102,581.
Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said the drop in asylum seekers could partly be attributed to the pandemic, which disrupted international travel and saw some countries resort to border closures, especially during the first wave of cases in the spring.
But Seehofer, a hardline conservative, also pointed out that the number of asylum seekers in Germany has been falling steadily over the past four years, which he said "showed that our measures to steer migration are working".
Just over 37,800 people were newly recognised as refugees in Germany last year.
Germany saw a huge influx of migrants five years ago after Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the country's doors to those fleeing conflict at the height of Europe's migrant crisis.
In 2015, Germany saw more than 400,000 first-time asylum applications, followed by over 700,000 requests the following year.
The new arrivals deeply polarised the country and fuelled the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which rails against immigration and Islam.
The German government has responded by toughening its migration policies and stepping up deportations of rejected asylum seekers or refugees convicted of violent crimes.
A decision to lift a general ban on deportations to war-ravaged Syria from 2021 has been heavily criticised by rights groups however, even if the government says it will only be applied to those deemed a security risk.
The refugee rights group Pro Asyl told DPA news agency on Sunday that Germany's low asylum seeker figures were a result of "Europe's rigorous border closures".
Many migrants were currently "stuck in misery" in winter temperatures in Bosnia after their camp burnt down, it added, "even tough the current asylum figures show: Germany has room".

Prof. dr. Sebija Izetbegović, general director of the University Clinical Center Sarajevo, told Hayat TV that the institution she heads is ready for vaccination.
Lists of vaccination teams and staff have already been prepared, as well as lists of staff to be vaccinated.

- In order to consume all doses of the vaccines in the prescribed time, we will work with a much larger number of people, much faster. Teams have also been prepared that will take care of people in case there are any unwanted reactions - said Izetbegović.
She points out that they are ready to help in the vaccination of citizens, although that is not in the description of the obligations of UCCS.
- This is a very important immunization so that everyone can return to normal life as soon as possible. That is why UCCS wants to help both the population and the Institute of Public Health. All employees with medical profession of the UCCS will be organized so that regular work and patients do not suffer, and to help vaccinate the population - said Izetbegović.

She adds that they will be engaged as much as they need because the health of the population comes first.

Let me remind you, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, an average of 40-50 people die from COVID – 19 every day.
When that number is multiplied by several months of evident delay in mass vaccination compared to other countries, a horrible figure of at least 1,000 or many more, unnecessarily deceased people is obtained.
These people will die because of irresponsible, lazy and immoral government.

The story of the recent arrival of "smaller quantities of vaccines" is a classic spin to try to calm down and deceive overburdened doctors and medical workers, but also citizens who are dissatisfied and endangered by bad government.
That is why urgent action is needed.
In B&amp;H now, in various budgets, there is enough money to procure vaccines. But, obviously, there is no responsibility in the Council of Ministers of B&amp;H - Radončić wrote.

Pope Francis urged Americans on Sunday to shun violence, seek reconciliation and protect democratic values, following the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol building by supporters of President Donald Trump that left five people dead.-I repeat that violence is self-destructive, always. Nothing is gained by violence and so much is lost- the pope said in his Sunday address.
It was the second time in as many days that the pope, who visited the United States in 2015 when Barrack Obama was president, spoke out on the violence in the Washington, D.C.
Dozens of people have been charged following the storming of the Capitol on Wednesday, with the FBI asking the public to help identify participants, given the proliferation of images of the riots on the internet. The five people who died included a police officer.
-I appeal to the authorities of the country and to the entire population to maintain a lofty sense of responsibility in order to calm things down, promote national reconciliation and protect democratic values that are rooted in American society- Francis said.
He said he wanted to send “an affectionate greeting” to all Americans whose country had been “shaken by the recent siege on Congress”.
Francis also said he was praying for those who died and that all Americans would “keep alive a culture of encounter, a culture of caring, as the master way to build together the common good”.
In advance excerpts on Saturday of a television interview to be aired on Sunday night, Francis said it was important to understand what had gone wrong and to learn from it.
-(Fringe) groups that are not well inserted into society sooner or later will commit this sort of violence- he said in the television interview.
Francis has had a rocky relationship with Trump, who visited the Vatican in 2017, disagreeing with him on a spate of issues, including immigration and climate change.

Belgium’s death toll from coronavirus infections, one of the highest per capita in the world, has breached the 20,000 mark, according to official data published on Sunday.
The country, home to the headquarters of the European Union and NATO, has played down comparisons that show it to be one of the world’s worst hit by the pandemic, but virologists point to some missteps and systemic problems. A country divided by language, Belgium gives regions substantial autonomy and has nine health ministers.
Public health institute Sciensano said 20,038 people have died in Belgium, according to the official count as of Sunday. An average of 58 people in Belgium died from COVID-19 each day in the seven days to Jan. 6, a decrease of 15% from the previous seven-day period.
Belgium is the second-highest in the world for deaths in proportion to its overall population, behind the tiny city state of San Marino, according to a tracker by Johns Hopkins University updated on Saturday.
Belgium’s government imposed tighter restrictions in October to rein in a surge in infections, including a night curfew, mandatory working from home and the closure of bars and restaurants, but cases have started to tick up again in recent days.
The government said on Friday it would not tighten restrictions for now, but would review these at its next meeting on Jan. 22 when it should be clearer how the festive season and the reopening of schools has affected the caseload.

After the worst snowstorm in decades, Spanish officials were racing Sunday to clear the roads of snow before a cold snap transforms them into icy death traps.
Storm Filomena killed three people during its passage through Spain and kept emergency services workers and army snow ploughs busy through Saturday freeing 2,500 drivers trapped in their vehicles.
The storm also brought heavy rains before moving through eastern Spain into southern France.
Spain's weather forecasters AEMET predicted heavy frost overnight Sunday to Monday in large parts of Spain. In mountainous areas temperatures would drop below -10 celsius (14 Fahrenheit), conditions that could last until Thursday, the agency added.
-Our aim is to make the most of every minute before Monday when the drop in temperature happens- to clear the roads, Madrid’s mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said late Saturday.
-From then, until the end of the week, it’s going to be very difficult to get about- he told Sexta television.
The capital Madrid and the surrounding region was one of the areas worst hit by the snow, with levels of snowfall not seen since 1971.
The army also had to clear the snow from Madrid airport, one of the regions worst hit by the snowstorm, which had forced the cancellation of flights from late Friday. They are not due to be reopened until Sunday afternoon at the earliest.
They also had to clear access to the city's hospitals, still struggling to cope with the country's coronavirus crisis.
The storm, through Friday and Saturday, left much of the country under dozens of centimetres of snow, an amount rarely experienced in Spain, blocking many major roads.
More than 700 major routes were still impassible Sunday morning said the government, with rail travel to and from Madrid also cancelled, at least until Sunday afternoon.
The authorities in the capital have closed the city's schools, colleges and universities at least until Wednesday.
As well as the Madrid region, the exceptional conditions hit another four regions -- Aragon, Valencia, Castilla La Mancha and Catalonia -- hard Saturday.

-Today's interview with Azem Vlasi, a well-known Kosovo politician and lawyer, in "Dnevni avaz", reminded B&amp;H public again about him, as a very important figure in the Yugoslav outcome. And, one of the first great political victims of Milošević's criminal regime.
Let me remind you that the "Balkan butcher" put him in a very strict one-year prison. In addition to the unprecedented harangue, he is accused of Albanian separatism, breaking up Yugoslavia, organizing thousands of Kosovo miners, who had closed themselves in deep pits demanding his release, and other serious alleged crimes.

In the cult Zagreb weekly magazine "Danas" that was then printed in circulations of up to 300,000 copies, I managed to publish an interview with him on March 27th, 1990. And that, from a strictly guarded prison.
It was a world exclusive.
After that, as expected, because journalistic freedoms were not at the level of today, I was taken to the police to confess to them how I managed to get into his cell, who let me in, who was the organizer, etc.
Of course, like many colleagues in similar situations, I said nothing.
However, after 30 years, I can uncover the secret of how that famous interview came about.
Rajko Danilović, one of Belgrade's most famous lawyers and an excellent intellectual who defended many political prisoners in the former Yugoslavia, was also Vlasi's lawyer.
I agreed with him that he, hiding from the guards submits my questions hidden in the lawyer's documents and that Azem would write his answers by hand in the following days.
And, again through Danilović, return the answers to me. With the help of Nadira Vlasi, Azem's wife and a very famous journalist of the then "Vjesnik", the answers reached me and I took them, in their apartment, in Priština.
The interview was sent by fax immediately from Priština to the "Danas" editorial office. All the world media reported it!
This was perceived as a severe disgrace to Milošević's security forces, a disgrace for the Counterintelligence Service, the police and the guard services.
In addition, the Chetnik media declared me a traitor, and a separatist promoter and accomplice.
Criminal charges were also filed for my help in breaking up Yugoslavia!?
Those traumas were left behind, and I continued to write against Milošević's policies. Vlasi became a lawyer.

Yet, as is often the case in life, 25 years after his arrest, Azem found himself in a position to publicly defend me and provide moral support.
As a lawyer, on January 26th, 2016., he directly called my trial in Sarajevo an inadmissible political indictment and gave several other elaborations in the same sense.
That is why politicians and journalists of my generation - who were shamefully silent at the time or even supported Milošević - who stupidly try to falsify my pre-war, war and post-war past in their yellow portals seem sad to me today.
