Germany’s domestic secret service placed one of the country’s most radical and violent groups opposed to coronavirus restrictions under surveillance, the Interior Ministry announced in Berlin on Wednesday.

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution considers parts of the protest movement against COVID-19 measures difficult to tackle because they question the legitimacy of state institutions, the ministry said.
Legitimate protests and demonstrations against the country's pandemic policy have repeatedly been exploited and escalations provoked, the ministry justified its decision.
From the point of view of the domestic intelligence agency, this particularly affects members of the so-called “Querdenker” group whose name translates as “thinking outside the box.”
The "Querdenker” group has made international headlines for being repeatedly involved in extremely brutal clashes with police where they attacked not only security forces but also media representatives.
They have also threatened people wearing medical masks and abiding by the hygienic rules against the disease.
The Interior Ministry cited also the group’s growing links to the country’s far-right scene as another reason for its decision to monitor the movement.
German authorities also fear that the conspiracy theories spread in the course of the protests against the coronavirus measures will not go away even after the end of the pandemic.

But so far it has stopped short of declaring it a "variant of concern", which would have indicated that it is more dangerous than the original version of the virus by, for instance, being more transmissible, deadly or able to dodge vaccine protections.
The BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine was the first to win authorisation in the West, and has since been deployed in dozens of countries worldwide.
Giving an update of the authorisation process in China, Sahin said approval was "very possible in July".

Sandis Girgens, minister of interior affairs, confirmed that firefighters had been prevented from carrying out routine safety checks in the building since January. 
-They had thick steel doors installed, and the hostel did not let our firefighting officers in- Girgens told local media.
Authorities had decided to shut down the illegal hostel but the fire broke out before the decision was enforced.

The European Union and AstraZeneca will begin their oral arguments on May 26 in the bloc's legal action against the pharmaceutical giant over coronavirus vaccine shortfalls, a Belgian court said Wednesday.

The EU is suing AstraZeneca for allegedly breaking their purchase agreement by massively under-delivering doses of the Covid-19 jab for its 27 member states.
The British-Swedish company has dismissed the case as "without merit" and insisted it will fight it fiercely in the Belgian courts, which have jurisdiction over the deal. 
The legal action -- which started Wednesday with a procedural session in a Brussels court -- is being expedited to speed up a ruling.
The EU says the case is aimed at ramping up deliveries of the doses it is entitled to and pressing the firm to use plants in Britain mentioned in the contract to supply the bloc. 
-The (European) Commission and the member states believe that AstraZeneca has violated many obligations under the pre-order contract, regarding the production as well as the delivery of vaccines- Rafael Jafferali, a lawyer for the EU, told AFP. 
-We will explain this to the court.-AstraZeneca's legal counsel Hakim Boularbah said the firm "deeply regrets" the EU's decision to launch the action. 
-We hope to resolve this dispute as soon as possible- he told journalists. 
The row erupted between the European Commission and AstraZeneca after major delivery shortages hampered early efforts to roll out inoculations across the drive.
The EU executive -- which is responsible for ordering vaccines for the bloc -- says overall the firm is set to deliver only a third of the 300 million doses it has promised by the end of June.
AstraZeneca's boss has insisted the company only committed to a "best reasonable efforts" clause to meet supply targets, and it says it is on course to deliver almost 50 million doses by the end of this month. 
The commission says the contract shows greater legal responsibility and officials have pointed out that the company has largely delivered promised doses to Britain, where it is headquartered.
The EU initially intended to use the AstraZeneca jab as the main workhorse to power the bloc's inoculation drive -- but has now switched focus to the more expensive BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine as its mainstay. 
The bloc is hoping an uptick in deliveries of vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and the single-shot Johnson &amp; Johnson jabs can help it gain ground on inoculation pacesetters like the United States and Britain.&nbsp;

-We have excellent cooperation with UNDP on several development programs. One of the aspects of this cooperation is in the field of health, and in that context, we are implementing this program to ensure material preconditions for mass vaccination of the population of Tuzla Canton. We are very grateful to our UNDP partners for that. Thus, we complete the preparations for immunization with this equipment and together with our checkpoint plan, i.e. the intention to do immunization through health centers. We still only lack vaccines, which unfortunately we cannot get on our own- said the Prime Minister of the Tuzla Canton Kadrija Hodžić.

US Ambassador to B&amp;H Eric Nelson stated today in his blog that every day B&amp;H citizens feel the effects of a short-sighted focus on entity competencies rather than on creating a functional B&amp;H that strengthens all citizens.

-The simple and important impacts can cost lives, like the lack of a central 112 emergency number. An updated state-level e-signature law is another commonsense reform that will improve the life of every B&amp;H citizen by reducing bureaucracy, speeding up delivery of public services, and easing international commerce. A central registry of bank accounts is necessary to combat money laundering, hinder corruption, block terrorist financing, and better secure the banking sector- wrote Nelson. 
He thinks that the future of all citizens is a single B&amp;H of two entities, three constituent peoples, with all citizens moving together as part of the European community.
-As Secretary Blinken communicated clearly, basic yet important rule of law, economic, and electoral reforms are what B&amp;H leaders can achieve this year. Instead of doing the work needed to create jobs and economic growth, root out corruption, end discrimination, and enable freer and fairer elections, politicians seek to distract and to abandon their own responsibility- Nelson stressed. 
He added that they do so by stoking fear and division reminiscent of the 1990s, a period to which nobody wants to return. They call for secession, want to revert to a retrograde "Original Dayton," and call into question the DPA-guaranteed existence of both entities.
-These distractions serve leaders’ interests by preserving the opaque and unequal economic and political systems that enrich them and maintain their influence at the expense of ordinary citizens and lives. Sanctions for destabilizing the DPA and for corruption are on the table. Citizens can deliver an even more powerful sanction at the ballot box. This is why reforms are so essential in this non-election year and why leaders seem intent on distracting citizens from what is at stake- wrote Nelson, the U.S. Embassy said.

Vienna will cautiously loosen its coronavirus lockdown next week a month after it was introduced, its left-wing mayor said on Tuesday, criticising the conservative-led government's plans for a broad easing of restrictions nationally next month.

Austria has had three national lockdowns, the last of which eased in February. Vienna, however, reintroduced a full lockdown on April 1 to help hospitals facing rising cases, particularly of the more dangerous so-called British variant.
Infections nationally have eased this month but remain stubbornly high at more than 1,500 a day. Despite that, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz last week said restaurants, hotels and theatres will reopen nationally on May 19, though provinces can have stricter rules locally if needed.
-The situation is improving but must still be taken very seriously- Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig of the Social Democrats told a news conference announcing that non-essential shops would reopen on Monday, May 3.
The opposition Social Democrats have increasingly criticised what they say are hasty loosening steps by Kurz's ruling coalition with the Greens.
Kurz's conservatives still have a commanding lead in opinion polls but recent surveys show their support eroding.
-Regarding May 19 and the government's announcement that a lot will be opened at the same time, personally I believe one should act very carefully here- Ludwig said.
-I think such a general opening is very difficult and here I agree with the vast majority of experts- he said, adding that nobody can give a reliable forecast for the situation more than 10 days ahead.
Kurz has said easing restrictions will drive up infections but vaccinating risk groups should limit hospitalisations, and other factors like jobs are also important.
-With all sympathy for the economic challenges, for example, people's health will always come first for me- Ludwig said.

Brazil's health regulator on Monday denied a request from several states to import Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, saying it did not have the data needed to verify the jab's safety and efficacy.

-We will never allow millions of Brazilians to be exposed to products without due verification of quality, safety and efficacy, or at minimum, facing the grave situation we are now going through, that the benefits will outweigh the risks- said Antonio Barra Torres, president of federal health regulator Anvisa.
Anvisa said its experts had flagged "uncertainties" about the jab, which has not yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or the United State's Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Anvisa, which received a request last month for emergency use of the Russian formula, has not released its findings, or cited the specific information it determined was lacking.
Russia registered Sputnik V last August ahead of large-scale clinical trials, prompting concern among experts over the fast-track process.
But later reviews have been largely positive, The Lancet medical journal publishing results showing it to be safe and more than 90 percent effective.
Experts at Anvisa said the medical journal's study had a different scrutiny process from the regulatory body.
-A journal does not have the same objectives of determining whether or not to approve the use of a vaccine- said Gustavo Mendes, one of Anvisa's technical managers. 
Brazil has recorded more than 390,000 Covid-19 deaths, the second-highest number globally, behind only the US. But the government has struggled to secure enough vaccine doses for the country's 212 million people.
So far, it has managed to administer over 38 million vaccine doses.
But the country's outbreak, which has sickened more than 14.3 million people, has continued to surge, pushing hospitals to the breaking point.
In an attempt to speed up their vaccine rollout, about a dozen states in the north and northeast of Brazil had signed contracts with Russia's RDIF sovereign fund to acquire more than 30 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine. The federal government had ordered 10 million more. 
-I hope that the Sputnik V vaccine process adapts its information and quickly resolves any compliance problems because millions of people need access to safe and effective vaccines- said Meiruze Freitas, one of Anvisa's directors. 
The Brazilian regulator gave the green light to two Covid-19 vaccines -- AstraZeneca and Coronavac -- in January, and has also approved both Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson &amp; Johnson's shots, which have yet to arrive in the country.
The Sputnik vaccine has so far been approved for use in 60 countries, including more than 10 in Latin and Central America. 
Argentina signed a deal with Russia earlier this month to become the first Latin American country to produce Sputnik V shots, and will aim for full-scale production to start in June.

A Mallorca man who infected 22 people with Covid-19 has been arrested on suspicion of assault for going to work and the gym despite signs he had the virus, police said Saturday. 

Police on the Spanish island began investigating at the end of January after an outbreak in the town of Manacor, following reports an employee had "become infected but hidden his illness", a statement said.
Days before the outbreak was detected, he began to show symptoms causing his colleagues concern but did not want to go home. 
At the end of the day, he went for a PCR test but didn't wait for the result, returning the next day to his job and also attending his local gym. 
At work, both the manager and staff insisted he go home because he could be infecting everyone, later telling police he had a temperature "of over 40 degrees Celsius" -- more than 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
But he ignored them and spent the day walking around his workplace, deliberately lowering his mask when he coughed and taunting them by saying: "I'm going to infect you all with coronavirus," police said. 
When his PCR result came through at the end of the day, it was positive, causing alarm among his colleagues who were also tested. 
Five of them also tested positive, and they in turn infected several of their family members, including three one-year-old babies. 
At the gym, three people who had been in direct contact with him were also infected and passed on the virus to family members.

Mallorca man arrested for infecting 22 people with COVID

The killing of a female police employee in a Paris commuter town on Friday was an attack on the French Republic, Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Saturday.

The attacker, a French resident of Tunisian origin, stabbed the police administrative worker, a mother of two, at a police station in Rambouillet, just south of Paris. The attacker was shot dead by police.&nbsp;Authorities have not given a motive for the killing. President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday France had been the victim of a terrorist attack.

Last October, a French schoolteacher was beheaded in Conflans, another commuter suburb near Paris, by a Chechen teenager who was then shot dead by police.

The attacker, a French resident of Tunisian origin, stabbed the police administrative worker, a mother of two, at a police station in Rambouillet, just south of Paris
