Winning the Nobel prize is often the peak of professional achievement, but chemistry laureate Emmanuelle Charpentier, who received the coveted award this week, has her sights set on repeating her success.
Speaking ahead of Thursday's live-streamed ceremony crowning the Nobel awards week, replacing the usual lavish royal banquet in Stockholm, the 51-year-old French geneticist described winning the prize as "life-changing" but said she still had many ambitions. 
-One ambition would be to win another Nobel prize, of course!- she told AFP. 
-But if I want to one day make another discovery, I know I'll need to isolate myself for some years, and I think that's pretty much impossible at the moment- Charpentier said. 
Another medal would see Charpentier echo the achievement of scientist Marie Curie, whose 1911 chemistry prize made her the first person in history to be awarded a second Nobel, eight years after her award for physics.
Along with Jennifer Doudna of the US, Charpentier won the Nobel chemistry prize for the gene-editing technique known as the CRISPR-Cas9 DNA "scissors", a tool that allows scientists to snip DNA and edit the genetic code of animals, plants and microorganisms. 
The discovery has huge implications for creating new medicines and for scientists' understanding of the role of genes in biology and disease. 
Although she has received dozens of professional distinctions and awards in the years since her research was first published in 2011, Charpentier said the Nobel felt special because it is "held in the highest regard by the public".

However, the public recognition brings with it its own demands and opportunities, which can eat into the time needed for research, she said. 
-The challenge in the future for me is to be able to organise myself to contribute to my role, to be present, to be an advocate for science and young scientists- she said. 
-I have to make sure I have time to lead my lab and hopefully some time to continue researching, too.- 
When the award was announced in October -- the first time a Nobel science prize has gone to an all-female team -- the pair said they hoped it would inspire a new generation of women in science.
Charpentier also said she believed the pandemic had increased the understanding of the importance of science among the public and governments, although she feared that funding would suffer in the economic downturn sparked by the coronavirus.

Because of the pandemic, the traditional Stockholm ceremony honouring the Nobel laureates has been replaced by an online event Thursday, featuring pre-recorded segments of the laureates receiving their prizes in their countries of residence.

Several hundred police carried out raids in Berlin and Hamburg on Thursday targeting organised crime, the authorities said in a statement. 
-More than 500 police officers are currently executing 27 search warrants and three arrest warrants in Berlin and Hamburg- the Berlin public prosecutor's office said on Twitter.
The raids began at 6 am (0500 GMT) and were aimed at two so-called "family clans" suspected of illegal property transactions, according to a report in the Tagesspiegel newspaper.
In Berlin, officers searched sites in the Charlottenburg, Mitte and Spandau districts, the newspaper said.
Connections to the biker scene are also being investigated, it said.
The raids led to "traffic disruptions throughout the city" on Thursday morning, the Berlin state transport ministry said.
Media reports named the Arab Abu-Chaker clan and the Turkish Surer clan as the targets of the raids.
Berlin in particular has seen several large operations targeting family clans in recent months.
In November, more than 1,600 police officers carried out major raids against a family known as the Remmo clan over a spectacular jewellery heist in the city of Dresden a year ago.
Three members of the family were arrested over the crime, in which more than a dozen pieces of diamond-encrusted jewellery were snatched from a state museum.
The family of Arab origin is notorious for ties to organised crime and its members were in February convicted in another high-profile museum break-in in central Berlin.&nbsp;

Citizens and businessmen on the territory of the Federation can request some kind of moratorium on loan repayment from their banks by the end of the year. Jasmin Mahmuzić, director of the FB&amp;H Banking Agency, said that in an interview for "Avaz".

He added that the Agency reminds banks and other entities about the importance of acting upon the decision and in accordance with the deadlines specified in the decision.
- The measures defined by the decision are aimed to establish sustainable payment modalities for clients suffering from the economic consequences of a pandemic. After the expiration of individual measures, after a period of 6 or 12 months, depending on whether it is a moratorium or a grace period, the application of regular decisions and the current regulatory framework continues - Mahmuzić explained.
According to him, clients who had the opportunity to use some of the measures are expected to establish regular payment of obligations.
- It is certain that some clients may have long-term consequences of economic disruptions. In cases of long-term impaired or changed solvency, there is still the possibility of contracting new repayment plans, but it will be mandatory to reclassify such loans into the category of non-performing assets (bad loans) - he said.
Mahmuzić points out that in the third quarter there was a partial recovery of the economy, which had effects on the share of loans under special measures.

- According to the data related to the end of October this year, 7.2 percent of the total portfolio of banks is under some of the temporary measures. According to the target groups, 11.3 percent of the corporate portfolio and 2.7 percent of the retail portfolio use some of the temporary measures. The stability of the banking system has been preserved, as a result of the previous and current activities of the FB&amp;H Banking Agency - Mahmuzić emphasized.
He added that the measures were aimed at stabilizing the situation on the market, reducing the negative economic consequences of the pandemic on the economy, citizens and banks.
- According to the indicators at the end of the third quarter of this year, the high level of liquidity and capitalization of banks in the system is maintained. As expected, the profitability of banks has been reduced, and a significant part of the negative effects can be expected in the next year, even if there is an accelerated recovery of the economy - concluded Mahmuzić.

The International Anti-Corruption Day is being marked today, and corruption is one of the biggest problems in B&amp;H, but also in the countries of the region. Vladimir Goati, the long-term president of Transparency International (TI) in Serbia, spoke about that for "Avaz".

- Since that difficult year when Yugoslavia went to God for the truth and practically disappeared, the countries have at least become aware that there is an immanent danger of corruption, that it is not just a word, but that it is like the sword of Damocles, which constantly hangs overhead. When the order becomes careless, it is in some way punished by corruption. It is a hardly visible danger that lurks in all countries - Goati told us.
He adds that people who engage in corruption become universal and learn from others.
- And maybe nowhere is there a greater willingness to learn something that will jump the order. Corruption is great and growing danger. The problem of these underdeveloped countries of ours is that corruption contributes, as a kind of debt to its underdevelopment. And everyday life is that none of us, including public servants, state dignitaries and officials, recognize that. However, some are taught and use it to achieve their hidden goals. That is not something that can be hit in the dim light - Goati points out.
He believes that people who fight corruption must learn a lot from those countries that have spent decades fighting it, often unsuccessfully.
- But it served to gain experience against corruption. Therefore, a great ability is needed to recognize corruption, and even greater to eliminate or combat it. Actors on the political and economic scene must be observed precisely and in the long run. And only then do political agents manage to somehow fight or at least reduce corruption. It is a very difficult fight with the enemy, which is not always completely visible, but often hooded - says Goati.

He stressed that, when it comes to corruption, there are no things that people will not find when it comes to their gain.
- People are extremely inventive for that. In corruption, the same purpose and result are repeated, but it is shifted in ways, in order to avoid previous schemes. That corruption is inventive, revealing, that work is constantly evolving - said Goati.

Commenting on the "Respirators" affair, which shook B&amp;H public, Goati says that this is an example of innovation.
- The novelty is this epidemic that we are facing. This is proof that, perhaps for the first time in history, large scandals in the field of human health are happening on this scale, that they are ready to, despite the fact that it did not happen before, exploit and manage to find ways to make their profit - said Goati

A hearing was held yesterday in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives, which was attended by several congressmen, as well as experts on the Western Balkans.

Experts have made recommendations to the future administration led by Joe Biden on what attitudes to take towards our region. It is a meeting at a very high level at which the American congressmen showed a high level of knowledge about our region and about B&amp;H itself, and a great interest in the events in our country.
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, John Hopkins University professor Daniel Serwer and analyst Janusz Bugajski have made recommendations to the new administration for further action in the Balkans.
The hearing was opened by Congressman Eliot Engel, chairman of the Committee. He said that the Dayton Agreement stopped the war, but it created a stalemate. He added that B&amp;H is now an ethnically controlled state that is "stuck" in this situation.
- B&amp;H is frozen, Republic of Srpska is blocking decisions of interest to B&amp;H. This must stop - said Engel.

He added that Biden must ask what comes next, because Dayton is no longer functioning. Albright said that Biden has been engaged in the Balkans since he was a senator.
- I know he understands this region and its importance for the United States. His team is ready to help countries move forward in integration, she said.
Corruption is a big problem, and nationalist leaders use ethnic divisions, she stressed. She added that China and Russia are pursuing their interests in the region.

- The next administration must develop a new regional strategy. I suggest three elements. The first is close cooperation with the EU. The Balkan countries should be in the EU - she said.
Second, she said corruption must be dealt with. Finally, the US and its allies need to turn to a regional approach and strengthen countries' economic ties with the EU. She stressed the importance of opening a representative office of the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) in Belgrade. She also said she was concerned about the behavior of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Serwer said that Dayton today serves the interests of "ethnic looting barons", of which "one is arming his statesman for secession, the other is encouraging him, and the third is complaining".

Bugajski said that constant threats to B&amp;H's integrity must have consequences and penalties, because they limit economic development and foreign investment, encourage interethnic discord, radicalism and threaten the state's survival.

Most participants pointed to the importance of constitutional reforms to make B&amp;H a functioning state. Much attention has been paid to Russia's influence in the Balkans, but also to China's growing influence.

During the last 24 hours, 1,296 newly infected with coronavirus were reported in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Of that number, 885 in FB&amp;H, 370 in Republic of Srpska and 41 in Brčko District. At least 59 people have died, 27 from the FB&amp;H, 28 from the RS and four in the Brčko District.
2,832 samples were reported to the Public Health Institute of the Federation of BiH, of which 885 were positive for the virus.
New cases have been registered in all cantons in the Federation of BiH. A total of 298,034 samples have been tested so far, and the virus has been confirmed in 62,606 cases.
As of today, 42,245 patients have been cured in the Federation of B&amp;H, and in the past 24 hours, 647 patients haver recovered. Currently 18,591 cases are active.
In the past 24 hours, 27 new deaths were reported to the Public Health Institute of the Federation of B&amp;H. As of today, the total number of deaths in the Federation of B&amp;H is 1,770.

Russia has announced a ban on imports of tomatoes from Azerbaijan beginning Thursday, in a damaging move for a key export that analysts tied to fallout from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor on Tuesday announced the embargo beginning December 10 to protect against harmful substances detected in several recent shipments.
It said the ban was necessary to "prevent the import and spread" of pesticides to Russia.
Azerbaijan is Russia's largest supplier of tomatoes, accounting for over 30 percent of imports, Russian news agencies reported.
While the vast majority of Azerbaijan's exports are petroleum products, tomatoes account for almost one percent of goods sold abroad and Russia is the main market for the produce, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity.
Moscow's tomato ban is due to come into force Thursday, the day Azerbaijan stages a large-scale military parade marking its victory over Russian ally Armenia in a six-week war over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The embargo is "Russia's response to Azerbaijan's victory parade," said Gubad Ibadoghlu, a policy analyst at the Baku Economic Research Center.
Armenia is a key importer of Russian arms and Ibadoghlu said Azerbaijan's parade of Armenian military equipment seized during the war "discredits the Russian military-industrial complex."
Deadly clashes over Karabakh were halted by a Moscow-brokered ceasefire that saw Baku gain swathes of territory previously controlled by Armenian separatists.
Moscow previously banned imports of tomatoes from Turkey in 2015 after Ankara shot down a Russian jet near the Syrian border, leading to a sharp deterioration in ties between the countries. 
Rosselkhoznadzor announced Wednesday a ban on tomatoes and peppers from Armenia's Armavir region and the southeast Qashqadaryo region of Uzbekistan, citing safety concerns.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday she still saw a chance for a Brexit deal with Britain but warned that the bloc would reject unacceptable terms.
Speaking ahead of crunch talks between British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, Merkel expressed cautious optimism about a trade agreement.
-There is still a chance for a deal- said Merkel, who holds the rotating EU presidency, but warned -we must not endanger the integrity of the common market.-

Merkel told the Bundestag lower house of parliament that the bloc must maintain its red lines.

She said the process of moving from a "harmonised legal system" between Britain and the EU to a time after Brexit when the systems "grow more and more apart" required a "level playing field for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow".

Israel received its first batch of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring the pandemic's end was "in sight" and vowing to get the first jab. 
-This is a great celebration for Israel- he said on the tarmac at Ben Gurion airport, near Tel Aviv, as a fork-lift truck started unloading the cargo from a red and yellow DHL air freighter.
The shipment was the first of eight million doses ordered from US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer BioNTech. 
It came ahead of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, which begins on Thursday.
-The end is in sight- Netanyahu said referring to the disease which has infected 348,948 Israelis, 2,932 of them fatally, according to a Wednesday update.
-What is important to me is that Israeli citizens get vaccinated- he added.
-I want to serve as an example to them and I intend to be the first to be injected with this vaccine in the state of Israel.- 
The Pfizer vaccine has yet to receive the necessary regulatory approvals for use in Israel but Netanyahu said he expected it to receive clearance "in the very near" future.
The results of third-phase clinical trials showed that the vaccine was 90 percent effective in preventing Covid-19 symptoms and did not produce adverse side effects among thousands of volunteers.
Britain started inoculating its citizens with the vaccine on Tuesday.
Israel has also contracted to buy six million Covid-19 vaccine doses from US biotech firm Moderna which are expected to be delivered in 2021, giving a total of 14 million shots for its populaton of nine million.

France’s next-generation aircraft carrier will be nuclear-powered and replace the national fleet’s flagship warship, the Charles de Gaulle, in 2038, President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday.
The 11th carrier-vessel in the French Navy’s will be equipped with the new electromagnetic aircraft launch system developed by U.S. company General Atomics, French officials said.
The carrier will be 300 metres (984 ft) long and have a deadweight of 75,000 tons. It will be able to carry up to 30 Rafale fighter jets or the successor of the Dassault warplane currently being developed by France, Germany and Spain.
France’s military had initially lent towards a ship with conventional propulsion, but together with Macron later opted for a nuclear-powered vessel, despite heavier construction costs, for technical and strategic reasons.

Oxford University and AstraZeneca became the first Covid-19 vaccine makers to publish final-stage clinical trial results in a scientific journal Tuesday, clearing a key hurdle in the global race to develop safe and effective drugs for the new coronavirus. 
The study published in the respected Lancet medical journal confirmed that the vaccine works in an average 70 percent of cases, with efficacy of 62 percent for those given two full doses, and of 90 percent in those given a half then a full dose. 
The results are the "first full peer-reviewed efficacy results" published for a Covid-19 vaccine, the Lancet said.

While waiting for the confirmation of the indictment in the "Respirators" case, which refers to the import of 100 respirators from China to B&amp;H at a price of 10.5 million marks, new irregularities are coming to light, "Dnevni avaz" has learned.&nbsp;

At the end of last week, the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H accused the Prime Minister of the Federation, Fadil Novalić, the Deputy Prime Minister, Jelka Milićević, the suspended director of FCPA, Fahrudin Solak, and the owner of "Srebrna malina", Fikret Hodžić.
We remind you that "Srebrna malina" contracted the job and imported the respirators without a bank guarantee and any coverage. And, as we find out, Hodžić and "Srebrena malina" do not even have warranty cards on imported goods which ensure that the goods can be replaced or returned to the manufacturer in case of failure.
According to the contract with FCPA signed on April 3rd, the guarantee was agreed and promised for a period of 24 months. In this way, Hodžić guaranteed the correctness of the devices. However, as we were told from FCPA yesterday, "Srebrena malina" never provided them with warranty cards. The request was sent to the address of this company almost four months ago, but it was never submitted to the federal agency.
This means that the complete deal, worth 10.5 million KM, was contracted without any guarantee, neither bank nor quality of goods. In case the respirators, which have never been distributed to medical institutions because it was previously determined that they have a system malfunction and are violently trying to install, are not correct, the Federation will run out of money and the devices will not be able to be returned or replaced with new ones.

Now, FCPA, which has signed a contract with "Srebrna malina", is waiting for further outcome of the situation. Termination of the contract is not excluded either, considering that certain institutions, such as the hospital in Mostar and "Prim. dr. Abdullah Nakas ", don't want these devices at all.
Their purpose has now become almost meaningless, regardless of the new hotspot of the pandemic. And the devices were bought without any coverage.

The company "Verlab", which was chosen to verify the respirators, as we were told yesterday, is waiting for an invitation from FCPA to start checking these devices. Earlier, the job was blocked because it had to be determined whether "Verlab" was authorized for this part of the job.
However, they are now waiting for a company from Belgrade that was chosen to perform the installation for free. The reason is that their installers were either infected or in isolation.

You have to understand me, on the one hand I am happy, I am glad, but on the other hand it echoes in my head "oh, my God, what am I going to do now" - explained Čičić.
According to him, in the coming period, the Academy will try to highlight the essential problems of B&amp;H society.&nbsp; - I will try to escape from the trivial nonsense and foolishness that we mostly deal with. In my statements, I often deviated from the established truths and expected answers, and I hope that we will continue with this practice - Čičić emphasized.

News about the rescue coronavirus vaccine arrives every day, and several more developed countries are already announcing the start of mass immunization. B&amp;H, which has been hit hard by the pandemic and has the highest mortality rate in the region, is awaiting procurement through the international COVAX mechanism.
Authorities estimate that the first vaccines will arrive in the first quarter, but the FB&amp;H believes that the immunization of the population will not begin before the second quarter of next year.

As we were told by the Federal Ministry of Health, so far no vaccine has been registered in the European Union, so it is too early to prejudge procurement. B&amp;H is part of the COVAX mechanism, nor do they have any vaccine that has passed the regulatory agency to be taken over. 
It is expected that vaccines will be registered in Europe only after the New Year, which means that B&amp;H will most likely start immunization in the second quarter, if we take into account that the registration will be before the end of the year or in the beginning of next year.
A vaccination plan against COVID-19 in the FB&amp;H has already been prepared. Another meeting with the Immunization Expert Advisory Body is expected this week to discuss it.
Also, as Goran Čerkez, a member of the Crisis Staff of the Federal Ministry of Health and Assistant Minister of Public Health, told us, B&amp;H currently has the ability to store vaccines that have a cold chain at minus 21 degrees and those that work at minus two to minus eight degrees.

- We already own that chain, however, it would not be a problem if we decide to establish a cold chain of minus 70 degrees. After the vaccine enters B&amp;H, it is stored in a central place from which it is transported logistically to other destinations, where everything is already prepared for vaccination. Local levels also own certain refrigerators, while some healthcare institutions already own the entire chain. The one from minus two to eight is owned by the entire FB&amp;H, because the regular vaccine is based on that, while the one at minus 20 exists in most of the FB&amp;H. This vaccine, after leaving the warehouse, can be used for a period of one month. While for "Pfizer", which is kept at -70 degrees, that period is significantly shorter, only a few days after leaving the chamber - said Čerkez.

In the last 24 hours, 1,012 new cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Of that, 690 are in the Federation of B&amp;H, and 322 in the Republika of Srpska. 65 people died, of which 37 in FB&amp;H, while in RS 28.
In the past 24 hours, 690 new cases of coronavirus were registered in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 37 people died, the Institute of Public Health of the Federation of B&amp;H announced.
New cases have been registered in all cantons in the Federation of B&amp;H. A total of 295,202 samples have been tested so far, and the virus has been confirmed in 61,721 cases.
As of today, 41,598 patients have been cured in the Federation of B&amp;H, and in the past 24 hours, 331 patients recovered. There are currently 18,380 active cases.
In the past 24 hours, 37 new deaths were reported to the Public Health Institute of the Federation of B&amp;H.
Since the last report about epidemiological situation in Republika of Srpska, 979 laboratory samples have been tested, and the coronavirus has been confirmed in 322 cases.
From newly confirmed cases, 162 of them are males and 160 females,of which 40 are younger, 187 are middle-aged and 95 are older.
In the last 24 hours, 28 deaths were reported to the Republika Srpska Institute of Public Health, in which the presence of the virus was confirmed. These are 19 men and nine elderly and middle-aged women.
