Thai authorities on Tuesday greenlighted a pilot model for quarantine-free travel to ultra-popular beach destination Phuket, a first step towards the tourist-hungry kingdom's goal of resuscitating its pandemic-battered economy.

Thailand has imposed strict restrictions on visitor arrivals in order to stem the coronavirus, but discouraging visitors has led to its economy recording the worst performance since the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
The hugely important tourism industry has been on tenterhooks since March, when the government floated the so-called "Phuket sandbox" scheme, which would have allowed vaccinated tourists to enter the country without undergoing the usual two week's quarantine.
But after a third wave of Covid infections engulfed the country in April, the scheme appeared to be on the back burner, thanks to muddy messaging from authorities.
Tourism officials and members of Thailand's Covid taskforce announced Friday the sandbox scheme was set to begin on July 1.
On Tuesday -- eight days before its launch -- government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said the cabinet of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha had officially given the scheme its blessing.
Besides Phuket, the other destinations include Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, all sun-soaked islands renowned for clear waters and sandy beaches. 
But tricky caveats to ensure the sandbox goes ahead without any disruptions include keeping infection rates low -- in Phuket the number of weekly Covid cases cannot exceed 90.
-As of today, the number of (infection cases) in Phuket can still ensure that the Phuket sandbox scheme will go on- said Covid-19 taskforce spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin on Tuesday. 
Thailand's tentpole tourism industry previously made up almost 20 percent of its national income.
Its losses have reverberated through other sectors including restaurants, transportation and the service industry. 
PM Prayut has come under vociferous criticism for his handling of the pandemic -- from the start-stop process in instating restrictions and the lack of state support for impacted sectors to the procurement of vaccines. 
The premier announced last week that he plans for Thailand to fully reopen to foreign visitors by October -- a vow that would require his administration to hit the target of innoculating 50 million Thais in four months, he said.

Minister Tanner said that she chose B&amp;H as the first country to visit Austrian troops, because she believes that Austria has very good relations with its neighbors in the Balkans, especially in B&amp;H.
She believes that the Western Balkans is very important for Austria, and said that they are monitoring the situation and that they are militarily present.
She thanked for the support that B&amp;H provides to the Austrian contingent of EUFOR, and pointed out that B&amp;H and Austria have special relations, which is reflected in the organization of various operations in various fields.
-The focus of our bilateral cooperation is the training of B&amp;H cadets at the Theresian Military Academy, where 18 B&amp;H cadets are currently staying. The training is going very well and I was told that the performance of these cadets is very good- said the Minister.

However, he stressed that the pandemic had limited them and that they had postponed some planned tasks, but announced to organize 20 activities in B&amp;H and 25 in Austria by the end of this year.
Podžić especially praised the cooperation in the field of educating cadets at the Theresian Military Academy, which has had 19 cadets so far, and announced the continuation of education after 2022.

A hearing was held today in the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina to extend the custody of Josip Barić, a police officer suspected of organized crime, and to hide and destroy evidence in the case of the murder of Dženan Memić.
According to the evidence of the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H, on the fateful night of February 8th, 2016, Barić did not take out the bloody sweater of Alisa Mutap, a girl who was with Memić on the night when he suffered fatal injuries.
Prosecutors Ćazim Hasanspahić and Dubravko Čampara explained to the Trial Chamber the motion to extend custody.
Hasanspahić stated that there are still reasons for Barić to remain in custody for another month because witnesses feel threatened and there are expert reports that have not yet been completed. 
On the other hand, Prosecutor Čampara stated that they are working on the identification of new suspects and their accomplices, and he emphasized that this is a complex case in which the institutions of the system covered up, faked and hid evidence.

It was not just a matter of the child suffering, but someone was watching him die and did nothing. If he knows something, let this prosecution be interested only in the truth - Čampara explained.
Barić's lawyer referred to the finding of the expert from Serbia, Ištvan Bodal, who, as she stated, said that it was a traffic accident in this case. However, the prosecutor clarified that no one officially hired that expert witness, nor did he have a summons from the court to make an expert report, so this is a finding that was not taken into consideration because it was incoherent and illegal.

German federal prosecutors said Monday they had arrested a Russian scientist accused of passing sensitive information from a German university to Moscow in return for cash.

They said in a statement the suspect, identified only as Ilnur N., had been taken into custody on Friday on suspicion of "working for a Russian secret service since early October 2020 at the latest".
Ilnur N. was employed until the time of his arrest as a research assistant for a natural sciences and technology department at an unnamed German university. 
Federal prosecutors believe he met at least three times with a member of Russian intelligence between October 2020 and June 2021. On two occasions he allegedly "passed on information from the university's dominion".
He is suspected of accepting cash payments in exchange for his services.
German authorities searched his home and workplace in the course of the arrest.
The suspect on Saturday appeared before a judge who remanded him in custody.
The case comes at a time of highly strained relations between Russia and Germany on a number of fronts including the ongoing detention of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, who received treatment in Berlin after a near-fatal poisoning.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government has also worked to maintain a sanctions regime over Moscow's annexation of the Crimean peninsula, the scene of ongoing fighting between pro-Russia separatists and local forces.&nbsp;However despite international criticism, Berlin has forged ahead with plans to finish the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, set to double natural gas supplies from Russia to Germany.

Germany arrests Russian scientist for 'spying' for Moscow

A French woman who killed the man who raped her for years as her stepfather before becoming her husband and pimp goes on trial for murder on Monday.

The case has mobilised defenders of women against male violence, with hundreds of thousands of people signing a petition for her release.
-I had to put an end to it- Valerie Bacot, 40, wrote in her book called "Everybody Knew", adding: "I was afraid, all the time."
Bacot was 12 when her mother's partner, Daniel Polette, who was 25 years her senior, raped her for the first time.
He was sent to prison, but after his release returned and resumed the serial rapes.
At 17, Bacot became pregnant, got thrown out of the house by her alcoholic mother, and went to live with Polette.
Polette, also a heavy drinker, became increasingly violent, attacking her with a hammer at one point.
He later ordered her to work as a prostitute for truck drivers passing through, using a Peugeot people carrier.
Investigators established that Polette threatened to kill her if she refused, pointing a gun at her many times.
When Polette started questioning her 14-year old daughter Karline about her budding sexuality, Bacot said she decided that "this has to stop".
On March 2016, after Polette ordered his wife to undergo yet another sexual humiliation by a client, she used the pistol that he kept hidden in the car to kill him with a single bullet to the back of the neck.
Bacot hid the body with the help of two of her four children. In October 2017 she was arrested, confessed and one year later released pending her trial while remaining under judicial control.Her lawyers said "the extreme violence that she suffered for 25 years and the fear that her daughter would be next" pushed her to kill Polette.
The same lawyers, Janine Bonaggiunta and Nathalie Tomasini, had already defended Jacqueline Sauvage, a French woman who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing her abusive husband but won a presidential pardon in 2016 after becoming a symbol for the fight against violence directed at women.
-These women who are victims of violence have no protection. The judiciary is still too slow, not reactive enough and too lenient towards the perpetrators who can continue to exercise their violent power- Bonaggiunta told AFP.
-This is precisely what can push a desperate woman to kill in order to survive- she said.
Bacot was "certain that she needed to commit this act to protect her children", a court evaluation found.
More than 500,000 people have signed a petition demanding that Bacot, who risks life in prison for murder, be cleared of the charge.
