Japan on Tuesday decided to end the state of emergency in the country imposed to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, local media reported.

The decision will formally go into effect on Thursday, said a report by the Tokyo-based Kyodo News after a statement by outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
Suga told a parliament committee that the number of new coronavirus cases and patients with severe symptoms had "dramatically declined."
- We will enhance social response to the spread of infections through vaccinations and health care system enhancement among other steps and work on balancing antivirus measures and restoring normal lives - he said, as the country has so far reported 1,696,061 COVID-189 cases, including 17,511 deaths, since the outbreak of the pandemic.
The state of emergency had empowered local governments to impose stricter measures to halt the spread of the coronavirus.
At least 18 provinces of Japan, including the capital Tokyo, are under extraordinary measures as the country has continued to grapple with the virus outbreak.
Japan first imposed the virus emergency last April under former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The Suga government extended and expanded the emergency several times since April 4 this year.
This move comes as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is set to elect its new leader on Wednesday to succeed Suga as premier in the first week of next month.
However, the government is still expected to urge people against attending crowded places while restaurant working hours will be curtailed for about a month after the state of emergency is lifted.

The Municipal Court in Sarajevo issued a verdict finding a violation of the right to privacy of the girl Nadin Smajlović, and her parents Amina Smajlović and Denis Smajlović, by the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS).
At the end of November 2019, the Smajlović family filed a lawsuit for damages.
According to the verdict, KCUS violated the right to privacy of Nadin, Amina and Denis Smajlović by publishing personal data on the health condition of the minor Nadin Smajlović, publishing personal data from the employment of Amina Smajlović published in the press release of the Discipline for Child Health of the Pediatric Clinic and KCUS from 18.11. 2019. and the announcement of the Eye Clinic of KCUS from November 20, 2019. year.
According to the verdict, KCUS shoud pay 35,000 KM to the plaintiffs, and according to the assessment of the court expert and the findings of the expertise. In the past two years, the Smajlović family had huge financial costs for the treatment of their child, which they moved to Turkey for further treatment and therapy after KCUS refused treatment. Nadin Smajlović's treatment is partly performed by the University Medical Center Tuzla.
KCUS also undertakes to publish a public apology to the plaintiffs for violating the right to privacy on its website within 30 days.

In a press release, KCUS presented the personal data of the minor child, such as her health condition, hospitalization, the course of the disease, diagnoses, the seriousness of her health condition, the prescribed therapy and the procedures to be taken. In the second statement, data on the number of days spent on Amina Smajlović's sick leave were presented, and they revealed the family history of Denis Smajlović.
The court found that the disclosure of these data violated the provisions of the Law on Personal Data Protection, the Law on Medicine, the Law on Rights, the European Convention, the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Criminal activity may have been behind an explosion that tore through an apartment building in Sweden's Gothenburg early Tuesday, authorities said, with 16 people injured including four seriously hurt.

Emergency responders said that the blast did not look like an accident, in a country that has suffered dozens of actual or attempted bombings linked to violent criminal gangs in recent years.
Ambulances, fire trucks and emergency crews swarmed the scene on Tuesday morning as thick smoke rose from the building, television images showed. 
- It's obvious that a crime cannot be excluded - Interior Minister Mikael Damberg told a joint press conference with Prime Minister Stefan Lofven.
Lofven, whose government has been criticised in recent years for failing to rein in rising gang crime, told reporters he did not want to "speculate" on the origin of the explosion.
- Everyone should know that society is always stronger than crime - he told the press conference.
According to regional newspaper Goteborgs Posten, a police officer who recently testified in a major gang trial in Sweden's second city lives in the building. 
- Obviously we will look into this - the officer, whose name was not disclosed, told the newspaper.
The exact cause of the blast, which triggered a fire in the building after it occurred just before 5:00 am (0300 GMT) in central Gothenburg, was being investigated, police told AFP.

- As soon as the site is secured, we will begin a technical investigation to determine the cause of the fire and explosion - he added.

Rescue operation chief John Pile told AFP that while an investigation was needed "an explosion in a housing area, or an explosion in general, is not usually from natural causes".

Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg's largest, took in 16 people with injuries related to the blast and subsequent fire, press officer Ingrid Fredriksson said.
- But it's not certain there won't be more, as this is an ongoing event - she told AFP.
Four of the people, three women and one man, were seriously injured, Fredriksson added.
Residents in the building told broadcaster TV4 that the blast caused massive damage to the structure.
Media reports said some residents standing on their balconies were evacuated by fire crews with ladders, while others tied sheets together to climb down.
Sweden has for years struggled to counter a rise in crime tied to gangs, with a spike in fatal shootings and bombings in an otherwise peaceful country.
In 2020, police recorded 107 detonations in the country of 10.3 million inhabitants, with another 102 recorded incidents involving attempted blasts or preparations.

Pfizer and BioNTech said Tuesday they had begun submitting data to the US Food and Drug Administration for the highly anticipated authorization of their Covid-19 vaccine in children aged five to 11.

Children have been infected in greater numbers in the latest wave driven by the Delta variant, and inoculating this age group is seen as key to keeping schools open and helping end the pandemic.
- These data have been shared with the FDA for the Agency's initial review - the companies said in a statement. 
- A formal submission to request Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of the companies Covid-19 vaccine in children 5 to &lt;12 years of age is expected to follow in the coming weeks - they added, with submissions to the European Medicines Agency and others also planned.
The news comes a week after the companies announced positive results from a global clinical trial showing the vaccines were safe and evoked a robust response of neutralizing antibodies, which stop the coronavirus from entering cells.
Children in the 5-11 age group received a two-dose regimen of 10 micrograms in the trial, compared with 30 micrograms for older age groups. The shots were given 21 days apart.
The FDA has previously said that once the formal submission is completed, the agency will complete its review "likely in a matter of weeks rather than months."
The Pfizer vaccine received full, formal approval in the US in August and is therefore technically available to younger children if prescribed by a doctor, but US authorities have cautioned against doing this until the safety data was in.
Pfizer and BioNTech are also trialling their vaccine on infants aged six months to two years, and on children aged two to five. 
Initial data for these groups may come as soon as the "fourth quarter" of the year.
In total, 4,500 children aged six months to 11 years were enrolled in the United States, Finland, Poland, and Spain.

A pregnant Algerian mother and her five children were among 91 migrants rescued off the coast of Alicante in southeastern Spain overnight, the Red Cross said on Tuesday.

The sea route to mainland Spain and its Balearic and Canary Islands is frought with danger, with the International Organization for Migration saying at least 1,025 people have died in 2021 in "the deadliest year on the migratory route to Spain".
The woman "was eight months pregnant," a Red Cross spokeswoman told AFP, saying she had been taken to hospital suffering from stomach pains, while her five children were with their father. 
Most of the arrivals were from Algeria although one boat was carrying refugees from Syria, she said.
- The first boat was found near Santa Pola with four women and six minors on board, including a baby of seven months while the others were between four and six - she said.
Of the 23 on board, "most of them were Syrians."
A spokeswoman for the Salvamento Maritimo coastguard said five vessels had been found in total, while the rescue of a sixth was underway.
All of the boats were thought to have set sail from the Algerian coast, which at its closest lies around 270 kilometres (170 miles) by boat from Alicante.
Last week, the bodies of eight migrants, among them three women and a child, washed up on the shores of southern Spain near the city of Almeria, the local authorities said. The boats had likely set off from Morocco or Algeria.
Spanish interior ministry figures to September 14 show that a total of 10,701 migrants have managed to reach mainland Spain or the Balearic Islands by sea.
