The announcement that the coronavirus strain sweeping Britain could be more deadly as well as more transmissible has raised fresh concerns about the variant that has spread to dozens of countries. 
Initially British experts said that their evidence suggested the new strain circulating in the UK -- one of several to have emerged internationally in recent months -- was between 50 percent and 70 percent more transmissible. 
On Friday, however, the government said the new variant could also be 30-40 percent more deadly, although it stressed the assessment relied on sparse data.&nbsp;

In mid-January, two separate studies by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Imperial College London were presented to Britain's New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG). 
They linked data from people who tested positive for the virus in the community -- rather than in hospital -- with death data and found a roughly 30 percent increase in the risk of death associated with the new strain.
The groups used slightly different methods, but both matched people with the new variant to those with the older variants, taking into account other variables like age and location and controlling for hospitals being under pressure. 
Other studies by Exeter University and Public Health England also found higher deaths and both came up with even higher figures.
Based on these analyses, NERVTAG said there was "a realistic possibility" that infection with the new variant is associated with an increased risk of death compared with previously circulating variants. 
The increase in transmissibility associated to the variant was already causing alarm, because the more people the virus infects the more people will suffer serious illness and the risk of death.
-Unfortunately, it looks as if this virus might be both more infectious and potentially more deadly- John Edmunds, a professor in LSHTM's Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases, told a press briefing Monday.
-So it's really a serious turn for the worse unfortunately- he said.

Researchers said there were still uncertainties in the data and said the picture would become clearer in the next few weeks. 
Edmunds said the findings were "statistically significant".
But he said while the studies used information from those tested in the community, most people who die of Covid-19 go straight to hospital and are tested there.
Researchers do not yet have that hospital information.
NERVTAG said this lag in data could be why the studies did not find evidence of an increase in hospitalisations of people with the new variant, which seems at odds with the findings of increased severity of disease. 
It also said the mortality data used in the research only covers eight percent of the total deaths during the study period and said the results "may therefore not be representative of the total population".

Researchers think it could be the same set of mutations that has made it more infectious -- although all stress more study is needed. 
One mutation in particular increases the virus' ability to latch on more strongly to human cells and NERVTAG head Peter Horby, an emerging infectious disease professor at Oxford University, said evidence suggests this means it could make it easier to become infected. 
-If it's then able to spread between cells much quicker within the lungs, that may increase the rate of disease and the rate of inflammation, which may then progress quicker than your body can respond to, so it could explain both characteristics of the virus- he said. 
Bjorn Meyer, virologist at France's Institut Pasteur, told AFP that the issue could be viral load. 
-The virus might not have evolved to be more deadly as such, but it might have evolved to grow more or better, which could cause more damage in a patient overall- he said.

Horby, who also leads the Recovery trial -- which identified the steroid dexamethasone as effective for severely ill hospital patients -- said there was "no evidence" that treatments would work less well. 
Anti-inflammatories such as dexamethasone "should work equally as well because it's not related to the virus, it is related to the host response", he said. 
Horby said overall improvements in therapies and treatments -- including things like better strategies for hospital respiratory support -- have brought down case fatality rates since the first wave and could even "offset any difference with this new variant". 
As for the vaccines, a preliminary study this month from Britain and the Netherlands found the variant would not be able to evade the protective effect of current vaccines. 
Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna have also released early research suggesting their vaccines would still be effective against the strain.

<h2>Don't viruses weaken as they spread?</h2>

Scientists have sought to challenge the belief that the virus will become get less virulent as it evolves to become more infectious. 
The virus that causes Covid-19 is already "very good at its job of getting transmitted" said Emma Hocroft, an epidemiologist at the University of Bern. 
-So I don't think that we can make this assumption that it wants to be less severe. I don't want to downplay that it is severe for many people, but for the majority of people, it's not severe- she told AFP. 
She said the ability to transmit before it kills was "a really low bar", citing diseases like measles and HIV that have remained as dangerous. 
Graham Medley, a professor of Infectious Disease Modelling at the LSHTM, told the Monday press briefing that despite uncertainties in the new studies on the new variant in the UK, they should dispel the idea that it would become less virulent. 
-It's certainly not the case that this is a more benign virus- he said.&nbsp;

The government said the new variant could also be 30-40 percent more deadly, although it stressed the assessment relied on sparse data.

The exhibition "Concentration Camps, Places of Suffering of the Jews of Bosnia and Herzegovina" by Eli Tauber opened today at the University of Sarajevo on the occasion of January 27 - International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Tauber said that the exhibition will be open for the next 15 days and that the posters show the camps, camp buildings, the deportation of Jews, laws that disenfranchise Jews, and many other horrors.
-The posters show that the Jews, having lost their civil status, were taken to the camps. They were crammed into cattle wagons, died on the way to the camps, killed when they got out of the wagons, and some of them were never even registered to have ever arrived in the camps. A small number of people survived the concentration camps, they were people of exceptional physical readiness or they were lucky not to end up in gas chambers- Tauber pointed out.
He also stressed that everything was extremely well organized and that nothing was left to the possibility of unforeseen things happening.
Speaking about Auschwitz, he pointed out that everything in that camp was planned in advance and that the camps were established in a way that would enable the most efficient execution.
-The number of people killed in Auschwitz should not even be discussed, but it is important to know that it was the largest 'death factory' and a very well-developed system of destruction with the so-called cyclone-B gas that was released into the drains. People were killed in a very heinous manner, they were taken for a bath and then they were killed- he emphasized.
Tauber claims that he also talked to some of the surviving Auschwitz detainees and that he saw that they had a hard time talking about it and that they often tried to suppress the memory. He also added that in many countries the Holocaust was based on prevalent anti-Semitism, which was not the case in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
-There were never any ghettos here, closed parts of the city for Jews only, which is why a relatively high percentage of Sarajevo Jews survived. In other cities, Belgrade and Zagreb, about 95 percent of Jews were killed in the Holocaust- Tauber pointed out.
In addition to the exhibition, a roundtable on the topic "Suffering of the Jews of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Holocaust" was held as part of the commemoration.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc said on Tuesday its antibody cocktail was effective in preventing COVID-19 in people exposed to those infected with the new coronavirus, based on interim results from a late-stage study.

The two-antibody cocktail, REGEN-COV, caused a 100% reduction in symptomatic infection and roughly 50% lower overall rates of infection, based on an analysis of about 400 participants in the trial who had a household member with COVID-19.
Regeneron said it would discuss the interim results with U.S. health regulators to potentially expand the antibody cocktail’s current emergency use authorization (EUA). Full data from the trial is expected early in the second quarter
.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November granted EUA to the antibody cocktail for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and children.
The current trial tested REGEN-COV for use as a passive vaccine, which involves directly delivering virus-fighting antibodies into the body unlike traditional vaccines in which the receiver’s immune system is activated to develop its own antibodies.
REGEN-COV may be able to provide immediate passive immunity to those at high risk of infection, in contrast to active vaccines that take weeks to provide protection, the company said.
-These data using REGEN-COV as a passive vaccine suggest that it may both reduce transmission of the virus as well as reduce viral and disease burden in those who still get infected- said George Yancopoulos, president and chief scientific officer of Regeneron.
The drugmaker also expects REGEN-COV to help people who respond poorly to vaccination.
During the trial, jointly run by Regeneron and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, one death and a COVID-19 related hospitalization were reported among those who received placebo, but there was no such incident in the treatment group, the company said.
REGEN-COV is also being studied in two late-stage hospitalized patient trials and a late-stage trial for the treatment of non-hospitalized patients.

Bowing to the emerging crisis, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Tuesday submitted his resignation, while maneuvering to boost his chances to return as the top candidate to lead a new government backed by a broader coalition.
After getting the resignation, President Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday will start consultations with the parties in parliament – expected to last just a couple of days – to try to cobble together a new cabinet able to lead Italy through a second wave of the pandemic and a dramatic recession.
Conte was forced to resign after losing last week’s confidence vote in the Senate, which sparked a government crisis just as Italy is faced with crucial economic and political decisions.
The outcome of the confidence vote left Conte without a sound majority in parliament, after former Premier Matteo Renzi pulled his tiny Italia Viva Party from the ruling coalition.
Having failed in a last-minute bid to broaden his majority, Conte and his government were forced to pull the plug, to avoid another defeat in parliament later this week.
Tuesday’s move marks the formal opening of a political crisis and leaves Mattarella faced with key choices.
He could give Conte another mandate to try to form a government, but he could also choose another politician or a technocrat to lead a transition or “national unity” government supported by a wider majority.

Colombia’s Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo died of COVID-19 on Tuesday morning, the country’s president announced.
-It is with deep sorrow and sadness that I have received the news of the death of our minister of defense Carlos Holmes Trujillo- said Ivan Duque Marquez in a video statement.
Trujillo had tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Jan. 12, after which his health deteriorated. He was hospitalized in the Military Hospital in Bogota, where he remained in an intensive care unit.
-I cannot express the pain I have- said Duque. -Carlos Holmes was my friend, my partner in battle, my co-worker and my minister.-
Before becoming minister of defense, Trujillo was foreign minister in Duque´s government. He had expressed his interest in running for president in the 2022 elections.
Former President Alvaro Uribe, one of Trujillo’s closest political allies, said the news of Trujillo's death “breaks my soul.”
The virus has killed almost 52,000 people and infected more than 2 million people in Colombia, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.

The Tuzla Canton Assembly confirmed at today's session the appointment of a new cantonal government with 19 votes in favor, 11 against and five abstentions.
The new cantonal prime minister will be Kadrija Hodžić, a professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Tuzla, a member of the Social Democratic Party of B&amp;H.
The new parliamentary majority, in addition to the SDP, consists of the PDA, Our Party and SBB.
New ministers in the TC government have also been appointed, four of them from the SDP B&amp;H. 
The three ministers are members of the Movement for Democratic Action (PDA).
Our Party has two ministerial positions in the new government.
The new Minister of Health is Božo Jurić, a member of the HDZ B&amp;H, a party that does not have a parliamentary status in the Tuzla Canton legislative branch.
Speaking about the work of the new government, the newly elected Prime Minister of the Tuzla Canton Kadrija Hodžić said that they would work transparently and openly, emphasizing that the focus would be on health and protection of every citizen in the Tuzla Canton, then on economic recovery, helping business entities affected by the pandemic, as well as encouraging entrepreneurship to keep the employment and liquidity of companies.

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued fresh clinical advice on Tuesday for treating COVID-19 patients, including those displaying persistent symptoms after recovery, and also said it advised using low-dose anti-coagulants to prevent blood clots.
-The other things in the guidance that are new are that COVID-19 patients at home should have the use of pulse oximetry, that’s measuring the oxygen levels, so you can identify whether somewhat at home is deteriorating and would be better off having hospital care- WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris told a U.N. briefing in Geneva.
The WHO advised clinicians to put patients into the awake prone position, on their front, shown to improve the oxygen flow, she said.

She declined to commment on reports of delays in roll-out of vaccines in the European Union. She said she had no specific data and the WHO’s priority was for health workers in all countries to be vaccinated in the first 100 days of the year.

A plea hearing has been scheduled in the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday for the accused in the "Respirators" affair, "Avaz" has learned.
We remind you that on December 30th last year, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina fully confirmed the indictment against Fadil Novalić, FB&amp;H Prime Minister, Fahrudin Solak, suspended director of the Federal Civil Protection Administration (FCPA), Fikret Hodžić, owner of "Srebrna malina" and FB&amp;H Deputy Prime Minister Jelka Milićević.
These four are accused of procuring respirators worth 10.5 million KM, but also of procuring protective equipment worth 2.9 million KM.

After several months of investigation, the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H filed the indictment on December 4th last year, and then sent it to the Court for confirmation. The indictment was confirmed only after finalization.
The accused Novalić, Solak and Hodžić, as well as the legal entity “F.H. Srebrena malina“ Srebrenica, as stated by the Prosecutor's Office of B&amp;H, is charged with having committed the criminal offenses of Association for the Perpetration of Criminal Offenses, among which are:
- Abuse of position or authority, receipt of reward or other benefit for trading in influence, money laundering, forgery or destruction of business or trade books or documents, forgery of official documents, breach of the obligation to keep trade or business books and compile financial statements and falsify or destroy them- it was pointed out by the Prosecution.
Milićević is charged with committing the criminal offense of negligent work in the service.
According to the indictment, Novalić is charged with using the circumstances of declaring a pandemic, as well as the capacities of the Prime Minister's authority in the Government of the Federation of B&amp;H, to devise a plan for illegal payment of budget funds for the purchase of coronavirus funds.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bisera Turković received today the Ambassador of Ukraine to Bosnia and Herzegovina Vasily Kirilich, and the interlocutors agreed that it is important to shed light on the affair with the Orthodox Church relic which the B&amp;H Presidency Chairman Milorad Dodik presented as a gift to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov during his visit to B&amp;H on December 14th last year.
The Ambassador emphasized that Ukraine never gave permission for the export of the relic from that country and that the item is of cultural importance for Ukraine.
Ambassador Kirilich has requested that the item be excluded from the competent institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina and requested for the arrival of Ukrainian experts to be enabled, who would, together with experts from B&amp;H, determine the circumstances related to the church relic.
Minister Turković informed the Ambassador about the steps taken after the note sent by the Embassy of Ukraine to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of B&amp;H and the actions of the B&amp;H judiciary in that case.
Considering that the situation has burdened the relations between the two countries, Minister Turković expressed hope that the competent institutions would resolve the matter as soon as possible.
Minister Turković and Ambassador Kirilich discussed a number of topics and issues, and expressed commitment to improving relations between the two countries in various fields, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of B&amp;H.
They also discussed the case of B&amp;H pilot Samir Beganović from Cazin, who died on August 1, 1994, in the Plitvice Lakes region when a Ukrainian plane was shot down.
The Minister said that B&amp;H is interested in finding the remains of Beganović, who, according to the latest information, are in Ukraine. Ambassador Kirilich said that a conversation had taken place in the competent ministry in Ukraine and that there was a working committee working on the issue. He stressed that the process is complicated by the fact that the event happened more than 25 years ago.
The Minister and the Ambassador emphasized the importance of continuing to improve bilateral relations, and in that context, emphasized the importance of the opening of the diplomatic and consular office of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Ukraine.

Turković - Kirilich: The affair with Ukrainian church relic must be resolved

Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović sent a request to the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina today to review the constitutionality of the Law on Technical Regulations of the entity of Republic of Srpska, with a proposal to repeal the law.
The request refers to the incompatibility of the provisions of the disputed law with the provisions of the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina relating to the establishment of a single market throughout the country, human rights and fundamental freedoms, international standards and non-discrimination, stated the B&amp;H Presidency.
The Request for the review of constitutionality emphasizes, among other things, that the Law on Technical Regulations of the entity of RS is in contradiction with the state Law on Technical Requirements for Products and Conformity Assessment, and that it establishes an unconstitutional, parallel quality infrastructure system.
-Its provisions ignore regulations and standards at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina, go towards the disintegration of its internal market and treat the rights of citizens differently in a way that gives priority to legal entities registered in the entity of the RS- wrote Džaferović in his request to the Constitutional Court of B&amp;H.&nbsp;

In the past 24 hours, 2,185 samples were registered with the Public Health Institute of the Federation of B&amp;H, of which 261 were positive for SARS-CoV-2.
New cases have been registered in all the cantons in the Federation of B&amp;H, except in the Podrinje Canton, according to the Institute.
Currently, there are 10,703 active cases of SARS-CoV-2. 
In the past 24 hours, 11 new deaths were reported to the FB&amp;H Public Health Institute. As of today, the number of deaths in the FB&amp;H is 2,438.
Today, 22 new cases of coronavirus infection were registered in the Brčko District of B&amp;H, out of 101 tested samples. Three people died.
Nine people have recovered, and 405 cases of the infection are currently active.
In the entity of Republic of Srpska, 683 laboratory samples were tested in the last 24 hours, and coronavirus was confirmed in 106 people.
In the last 24 hours, 13 deaths were reported.
So far, a total of 2,027 people died in the entity.

Health workers spent last night in a tent in front of the building of the Government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (HNC), since there is no progress in negotiations on a new collective agreement, said President of the HNC Independent Trade Union of Health Workers Dalibor Vuković.
-Two colleagues spent the night in a tent while the rest of us rested a bit and we are still waiting for someone to contact us to see what and how to proceed. As for the negotiations, nothing new has happened, and the most interesting fact is that yesterday the Government called on for negotiating, but again they did not write when and at what time to come, so those are empty words- said Vuković for FENA.
He reminded that the legal team of the union sent and submitted evidence requested by the Municipal Court of Mostar yesterday.
-We are waiting for the decision of the Court regarding the temporary ban on conducting and organizing a strike, which was requested by the Government of the HNC. We hope for a fair and just decision- Vuković added.
About two thousand members of the Independent Trade Union of Healthcare Workers of the HNC and the Independent Trade Union of Employees of SKB Mostar have been on a general strike since December 10 last year. Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Fadil Novalić, said today in Drvar that the municipality, as well as neighboring Glamoč and Bosansko Grahovo, are endangered and not economically viable, and that the wider community should provide more support.
After the meeting with the mayors of the three municipalities, Novalić stated that those local communities have almost identical problems with refugees, economy, infrastructure and budget maintenance.
-We considered how to provide more help to these municipalities, although there has been no shortage of help so far, and we concluded that we will have to adopt an asymmetric approach to supporting municipalities in the Federation of BiH in order for those underdeveloped to get more- said Novalić.
He added that today it was agreed to make a list of priorities in each area and to hold a new meeting in a few months and determine how to respond to those problems.
-If good projects are designed, the support can amount to up to 700,000 KM per municipality- Novalić specified.
Mayor of Drvar, Dušica Runić, emphasized that those municipalities, which are among the least developed in B&amp;H, should develop cooperation with all levels of government and that she hopes that these levels will find funds in the budget to support them.
Mayor of Glamoč, Nebojša Radivojša, stated that it was agreed to jointly try to help maintain life in those local communities, and to hope for successful cooperation.
As the Mayor of Bosansko Grahovo, Uroš Đuran, said today’s meeting was very useful at which they presented their problems to the Prime Minister, and he presented them with opportunities for support.
Minister of Displaced Persons and Refugees of the FB&amp;H, Edin Ramić, was also present today and after the meeting they visited Memorial Complex of 'the 25th of May' Museum and the exhibit space of the site of Tito's cave.

He added that today it was agreed to make a list of priorities in each area and to hold a new meeting in a few months and determine how to respond to those problems

I also point out that bringing untruths and insults to my account affects my health, both physically and mentally, and at the same time the ability to perform numerous daily professional and private duties.
In order to reduce the damage from defamation and insults, and to properly inform the public in terms of Article 15 of the Press and Online Media Code of B&amp;H, I submit a request to the Portal immediately, and in print within 24 hours of receiving this request, on the front page and the same pages of newspapers, ie. in the same place on the Portal where the disputed articles were published, in integral form, including the title,to publish this denial:
"Dnevni avaz carries out media lynching of President Debevac and puts pressure on public authorities"
Dnevni avaz and its portal for a long time, day by day, have been doing my media lynching as the President of the Court of B&amp;H, abusing the media as a means of discrediting me as President, while making insulting and untrue allegations. Such writing is not only an illegal act of these media, but also disrespect of the judiciary and illegitimate pressure on me and my colleagues.
Legal, professional and ethical rules of conduct in B&amp;H oblige all journalists to allow every person who is written about the right to reply before publication, which Dnevni Avaz and its portal have never done, but have published articles without the opportunity to comment on any claims and statements. In this way, at the same time, the public is prevented from hearing the other side, which is one of the basic rules in a democratic society, so that everyone can create their own judgment on the topic being written about.
I am obliged to say that, as the President of the Court of B&amp;H, I have never in any way abused my position, position of power, my influence or used public funds, the state budget or resources for private purposes. I finance all my private needs by myself. I deny that I have provided anyone with questions and answers for any type of exam, I deny that I have influenced anyone with my position. I will never be against my public engagement and work being publicly discussed, analyzed and criticized. But it is my constitutional right that my private life, including my emotional life, to be protected from the public like any other man in our state. Avaz illegally and unconstitutionally intrudes in my private life and exposes it to the public eye, unscrupulously twisting it in order to influence public opinion and create illegitimate pressure on public authorities.
This is a classic example of media abuse. This is a clear message from the people behind Avaz that no one, not even the highest judicial officials, can be sure that their privacy will not be exposed to the public the moment dissenters or opponents are hindered on the way to achieving their goals. Avaz does not choose the means.

Finally, for alleging that I committed criminal acts in the form of "abuse of position", "illegal spending of public funds","trading in influence", or "absolutely unfounded and flat insulting as a "predator", "abuser" and etc. I will seek my satisfaction before the competent court.
In order to reduce the damage caused to me in this way, it is additionally necessary for the editors of the newspaper "Dnevni avaz" and the portal "Dnevni avaz" to state through these media, after the place where the denial will be published, their apology for the untruths and insults - it is said in Debevec's reaction.

The President of the Court of B&amp;H Ranko Debevec is persistently silent about the fact that he traveled to Spain with an employee of the Court of B&amp;H with whom he was in an emotional relationship, Alma Ć.
He also does not deny that he did not report any dual citizenship or real estate in Malaga to the BiH authorities, and he had to.

The President of the Court of B&amp;H, Ranko Debevec, does not deny that the Office of the Disciplinary Prosecutor has so far formed three disciplinary cases against him, due to reports of abuse of office, but also evidence published by "Avaz".

The Municipal Election Commission (MEC) will support and implement all decisions of the Central Election Commission of B&amp;H, which relate to the annulment of the November elections in Srebrenica - said Ljiljana Stevanović, president of the MEC Srebrenica at today's press conference.
